The Uses Of Basic Life Support In Certain Emergency Situations

Basic Life Support is the core foundation of CPR which promotes adequate blood circulation in a patient of a sudden cardiac arrest, choking or drowning in addition to promoting breathing through a clear airway. There are certain guidelines for BLS and they are formulated by professional medical bodies of each and every country and those guidelines outline the requisite algorithms for the management of serious conditions which can range from a sudden cardiac arrest to drowning. According to American Heart Associoation, in order to be BLS certified a person needs to take an online course or an in-person course from an AHA certified institute. CAB or circulation, airway and breathing is recommended according to the new AHA guidelines and it should be followed strictly in learning and teaching BLS. Apart from a sudden cardiac arrest, there are certain other conditions in which the process of BLS can be administered and they are:

  • Drowning- This can be a serious emergency condition which can occur all of a sudden and in this regard it has become mandatory nowadays for all life-coaches to be well-certified in BLS. So, if a condition as such arises the rescuer should immediately provide with BLS after removing the victim from water and rescue breathing or mouth-to-mouth breathing is very important in such a situation. The process of the mouth-to-mouth breathing should be continued until any medical help arrives since the primary cause of death or a cardiac arrest in a drowning victim is hypoxia, so, it becomes all the more essential for providing with rescue breathing.
  • Choking- Anybody can choke because of obstruction of a foreign body in the airway and people can even succumb to death because of this. Such situations can take a very serious turn if not treated on time. If a situation as such arises, a rescuer should not interfere with a victim if he/she is coughing forcefully as this will help the victim to cough out the material obstructing the airway. If the situation still persists, chest thrusts or abdominal thrusts should be applied on the victim in rapid sequence to clear out the obstruction. If all else fails, the last recourse which remains is the BLS whereby the rescuer, after opening the airway of the victim should look for the object obstructing the victim's mouth and remove it or call for emergency services.
  • Hypothermia- BLS can be used in victims with hypothermia which is an abnormal condition where a victim has a dangerously low body temperature, so, in such a condition, the breathing and pulse should be checked for around 30 to 45 seconds and if it's a condition of cardiac arrest, immediate BLS should be initiated after insulating the victim from wind. The process of BLS should be continued until any medical assistance arrives.
